THE FIRST
HALF
After the typical scrappy first 15 minutes, the Wirral Chinese defended
really well with Stephen Barrow, Mark Johnson, Danny & Tango at the
back. Central midfielders Chung and David Liu were as determined as ever
and held their own against a large Wirral Nomad team. New edition Brett
played well at right midfield, running up and down the flanks and covering
very well for right-back Danny. Mike Yee was forcing the Wirral Nomad
back-line as usual and Captain Roger Ho was the invaluable link between
attack and midfield, and it was from Roger where the break-through was
made. A great tackle be David Liu in midfield was released to Chung, who
slotted the ball to Roger. Roger managed to play the perfect ball through
the Wirral Nomad defense to release Mike Yee down the left. While the
Wirral Nomads appealed for an offside that never was, Mike chipped the
ball with his first touch and the ball smacked the inside of the left
post and into the net. One Nil.
After that the Wirral Nomads played down the wings and used long balls
to create chances. The back four and midfield were very good in defending
through the centre and reduced the Nomads to crosses and punts up the
field. Chris Magin played excellent in goal but 2 rather fortunate cross-shots
managed to creep in and the Nomads went into half-time with the lead.
THE SECOND
HALF
The second half was pretty dull for about 20 minutes until the Wirral
Nomads scored. Another cross came in was defended, but a slight mix up
gifted the Nomads with a simple tap in. at
3-1, the score was slightly flattering but the Wirral Chinese kept attacking
and chances came their way. One of them saw Mike Yee take on a couple
defenders down the left to the touchline, but his weak left-footed shot
was easily saved by the Nomad keeper. Other efforts were shots from distance
but with 5 minutes to go, after wave after wave of attack, the ball found
its way to Jordan on the left hand side. He clipped the ball to Mike Yee
who had his back to goal. Mike controlled it in the air with his first
touch, turned and chipped a defender with his second and finally chipped
the keeper with his third! The ball never touched the ground and even
the Wirral Nomad keeper applauded the superb goal! That made the scoreline
respectable and the game ended 3-2.
OVERALL
It was a good performance by the team and we can take great confidence
into the next few games this summer. The defence (Tango, Danny, Stephen
Barrow, Timothy Yee, Chung & Gary) and midfield (Brett, David Liu,
Chris Heseltine & Wah) played very well together and as long as we
have that core setup we'll have no problems. Chris Magin in goal was superb
again - always keeping us in the game. Mike Yee did well in attack, claiming
his customary goals, but Captain Roger Ho was fantastic. His motivation
and commanding attitude was vital in the team's performance and he easily
ran more than any other player on the pitch. He was helping out in defence,
covering for midfielders and supporting Mike Yee whenever he could.
